On Tuesday April 26, 2016, 25 students and teachers from Heritage High School’s Academy for Water and Environmental Technology attended a field trip to the Florida Resources Conference.
The objectives of the Academy, supported in part with an annual grant from FSAWWA, are to help develop the next generation of environmental stewards who are actively working to improve the environment, enhance drinking water distribution, and wastewater treatment systems. The academy will produce graduates who are proficient in water technologies and water resources management and who will enter post secondary education and /or the work force with the knowledge and skills to solve many broad based environmental challenges.
Students graduating from AEWT will have taken, and passed, the FDEP water or wastewater licensure exams. All they need is the 2080 hours of actual in-plant experience to be issued a license by the State of Florida. Some students will be going to college and thinking about trainee positions to supplement their college finances, some are looking for trainee positions immediately following high school.
Excited students after a motivating meet-and-greet with FSAWWA professionals discussing possible exam content and career opportunities.
The students dressed in the black shirts will be taking the Class C FDEP exam in early June. The students in the blue shirts are juniors and will take the exam in June 2017.
The Operators and Maintenance Council hopes to make this an annual event at the FWRC.
